2024 KBS Schedule – Happy New Year!

Welcome back KBS Members and New Members for 2024! 

We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming meetings, please see schedule below and check back often for updates or changes. Be sure to keep your trees protected from the January east Tennessee winter storms in an unheated garage or lean-to!

1 – Jan 13 meeting at Stanley’s Greenhouse – from 10-12 noon.

2 – Pot making workshop with John Cole on Saturday, January 27 – contact us for more details!

3 – Feb 10 meeting at Stanley’s Greenhouse – New time is from 12-4.

4 – Feb 17 – Free Trident maple workshop at my house from 10-4. This is good time to do grafting, re-potting and trimming on trident.  If your trees are outside and frozen, bring them inside to an unheated area at least a week before the workshop.  Bring your own materials.  I have some seedlings you can buy to do your grafts.Workshop is free to paid 2024 members.  Will take donation and all donated money will to the club.

5 – Mar 2 workshop – Details TBD.

6 – Between early march to mid march lots of deciduous trees will be budding out.  Just before the buds open, (and this is only suggestion) you can spray the trees with copper mixed with water to control fungus. You can buy premixed or mix 1 tablespoon per 1 gallon water.

7 – Mar 16 – Meeting from 10-4.  Bring your trees for spring works and re-potting.  We will go a little long bc I am sure we have lots to do.

8 – Mar 17 – Atlanta Bonsai is having their show the weekend of Mar 16 and 17. 

9 – Mar 23 – Workshop – details TBD.

10 – April 13 – Meeting from 10-2.  You still can re-potting conifer, Juniper.  Too late on deciduous.

11 – April 13 and 14 – Chattanooga’s show this weekend at Camp Jordan.  We are invited. More info later.

12 – May 11 – Deciduous air laying workshop from 10-2.  You also can do defoliate on your deciduous trees. By this time the leaves are harden off and can do trimming/defoliate on them.

13 – June Meeting. Date and place to be confirmed. Either June 1 or 8. Tropical workshop with Dan Crossley.

14 – I am looking to planning a trip to NC Arboretum in the fall and see if Arthur Joura (Curator there) will give us a tour/lecture on their facility.

15 – Planning a fall workshop with Bonsai Pro in the fall.

16 – If you have not send in your 2024 membership. Please do so soon. You can wait until next Saturday to pay at the meeting. We can not function without you guys commitments. Thanks to those have already sent in.

KBS Fall Show – Sunday Oct.22nd

Come join Knoxville Bonsai Society’s 23rd annual Fall Display – Sunday October 22nd from 10am – 7pm.

Located at the beautiful Knoxville Botanical Gardens and Arboretum, 2743 Wimpole Ave., in the Dogwood Building Center.

Admission is free – event indoors and family friendly! 40+ local trees on display from across the state and surrounding Southeast cities. We will have guests artists, demonstrations, and vendors selling trees, pots, stands, and accessories.

Saturday August 26th – 10th Annual Asian Arts Festival

10th Annual Knox Asian Festival

Aug 26th, 10:30 AM – 8:00 PM

 Knoxville Asian Festival @ World’s Fair Park

Prepare to experience authentic foods, exciting performances, and traditional activities that represent the Asian cultures of:

 Japan, Indonesia, China, The Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea, Nepal & Myanmar.

What’s Happening in 2023:

The Asian Cultural Parade will start at 10:30 AM at the Water Fountain on the Festival Lawn and end at 11:30 AM at the Amphitheater stage. During the festival, booths for each country will have Food VendorsActivities, & Performances. We will also have ongoing performances in the Amphitheater, including FREE Sumo Demonstrations & photo opportunities! 

Knoxville Bonsai Society will be featuring local Members’ trees on full display at the #BONSAI booth during the Asian Festival. Members from across east-Tennessee will be in attendance to answer bonsai questions, show off their trees, with free mid-day DEMONSTRATION of pruning and shaping!

Tennessee Valley Bonsai Society Annual Show 2023

TVBS will have our annual show at The Master Gardener Show next weekend (April 15 and 16, 2023) at Camp Jordan. We would love all of our fans and followers to come out to see what our club has been doing. It’s a great chance to see a lot of high level/advanced bonsai up close and ask all your questions!

KBS Knoxville will have a few trees on display, come out and support all our bonsai artists across eastern Tennessee!

KBS Fall 2022 Show October 15-16

Details for the Knoxville Bonsai Society Fall Show have been released!

Join us October 15-16th, 2022 for the KBS Fall Show. Shannon Salyer will be Guest Artist.

Show place: Dogwood center Bldg at Knoxville Botanical Gardens.

Saturday, Oct 15th

  • Set up from 8 to 10
  • Doors open: 10-6
  • Workshop:  BYOT (2 trees max) from 12-4. Cost $50.
  • Critique: 4:30 – 6

There will be a food truck on Saturday from 11 to 2:30

Sunday Oct 16th

  • Doors open: 9-3
  • Silent Auction: 9-2:30

We have 5 Vendors from neighboring Cities and States with their trees, bonsai pots and stands.

Awards for trees: Best small tree, best medium tree, best large tree, best of show and people’s choice.

KBS Meeting and Wiring Workshop Oct. 23rd

Meeting is this Saturday, Oct 23, from 10am to 1pm – Contact us for details!


Please bring your trees to work with. We will be there to help. You can bring conifer, tropical and deciduous. Please bring your tools and wires. We would like to teach/demo on wiring. We will have some juniper and deciduous branches and you guys can practice on wiring a branch!

July Members Meeting Sat. 17th, 10am

1 – Meeting is this Saturday, July 17, from 10 to 1 and it will be at Mark and Pat Phillip’s place. Contact us for address/location.  It is also Mark Birthday so we will have cake and ice cream!
2 – Please bring trees if you need help.
3 – The show preparations are going well and I have some updates:
  a. We have about 30 spaces for KBS members to display their trees.
  b. 6 spaces for Beginner trees. This is filled and the names of the people committed are Matt, Carol, Arvind, Joe. Q, Noah and Julian. Thank you. 
  c. 24 spaces for KBS Members.  Again as for right now I would like each Member to commit at least one tree and the names of the people committed are Dat. Tom, Wes,Jeff, Jacob, Dean, Randall, Gary, Noah, Amy, Mark, Mike, Kathy, Ryan, Ian, Shannon and Dan.  Thank you so much.  So I have 17 people committed. I need 7 more people. If your name is not on the list, please let me know by the end of July 18 by Contacting Us

2020 Winter Display Winner

  d. If I don’t hear from you, Then the committed people can add second tree. If I don’t have enough, then committed people can add third tree. and so on until spaces are filled.
4 – Set up and take down is on Friday & Sunday and people committed to help set up are Julian, Dat, Noah, Ken, Mike and Arvind.  If you would like to help, please let me know.  Set up is from 4 to 7. Rental will be bring the tables about 3.  Take down is on Sunday right after the show ended which is 3 PM.
5 –  I want to thanks Julian and Sandi for helping out by contacting Restaurant for the dinner on Saturday night.
6 – Dinner on Saturday night will be right after Bjorn’s critique and It will (as of right now) in the same bldg in the room where the workshop will be. Bjorn’s critique is from 5:15 to 7:00.  The cost for the dinner is $20 per person. Cash or check only.
It will be catering by Calhoun’s on the River.

KBS 20th Anniversary Bonsai Show – August 28th-29th

Saturday 10am-5pm (Workshop mid-afternoon, full)

Sunday 9am-3pm (Silent Auction 9am-2pm; Demonstration 10:30-12:30)

Beautiful styled bonsai on display from local area artists of all categories. Vendors, silent auction, demonstrations, and judging competition open to the Public Free! Workshop for KBS and local-area club members (contact for details)
